The staff of Centre of Attention is comprised of 19 scholars in the journalism/mass media focus area on the Centre College of the Governor's Scholars Program. They publish their paper weekly on Wednesday afternoons.
BIOGRAPHIES
Dylan Taylor, 17, was born on April 14th, 2005. He goes to Whitley County High School in Corbin, Kentucky, where he is very active; he is in National Honor Society, Beta Club, and is an active member of his school's JROTC. Program. At GSP, he lives in Acheson-Caldwell and enjoys his General Studies class, We Don’t Like to Be Confused, which discusses humor. Dylan has no prior journalism experience but is very excited to use all of the camera and audio equipment in class. He is interested in journalism because he wants to pursue a communications major in college. An interesting fact about Dylan is that he enjoys reading, playing the trombone and piano, and playing percussion in his school's band. by Anakha Shah
Kallise Gammon is a 17-year-old scholar from Mercer County High School in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. She plays softball and volleyball for both her school and travel teams. At her school, she’s involved in National Honors Society, Beta Club, Y Club, Leadership, Youth Leadership, Student Council, and she manages the boys basketball team’s media. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hanging out with her friends, spending time with her dog, Brutus, and going out to eat. Kallise chose journalism and mass media as her focus area for GSP because she wants to major in marketing or communications in college, and she thinks it will be a good learning experience. She has previous experience writing papers about Y Club for her local newspaper and writing for the city’s tourism department. Anakha Shah, 16, was born on November 1st, 2005. She attends school at duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky. Throughout GSP, she’s very excited to attend all the movie nights and interview the RAs for Journalism. In her free time, she loves to read and play the violin and piano. She currently stays at the Northside Residence Hall at Centre College. She views medicine as a potential study in college/her career path. She doesn’t have much journalism experience, but she chose this class as a way to try something new. Aliza Sanchez is 16 years old. She goes to Ryle High School in Union. Aliza is very involved in her school. She does National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Hispanic Honor Society, Health Occupations Students of America, Gardening Club and Future Business Leaders of America. She also acts as the Secretary of her Student Council and the sports editor/photographer of her yearbook. In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching TV shows, hanging out with friends, watching her high school sports, and traveling. Aliza’s favorite aspect of journalism is writing because she can meet new people and gain new insights. She was able to gain journalism experience through working on her school’s yearbook. Aliza chose journalism as a focus area because she enjoyed working on her yearbook and wanted to gain more experience and skills in this area. Stella Shearer is a 17-year-old from Hebron, Kentucky. She goes to Conner High School where she participates in Future Business Leaders of America, National Honors Society, and Student Council, and is a member of the golf team. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and watching television shows. So far Stella has enjoyed the movie showings and is looking forward to meeting new people. She has always thought Journalism was interesting and has some Journalism experience. She was a co-editor for her school's yearbook and took pictures for it as well. She also submitted pictures to her county fair and won Best in Show. Stella wants to go to the University of Kentucky and major in Integrated Strategic Communication and go on to do Social Media Marketing. Elijah Hall is a 17-year-old writer and photographer from Louisville, Kentucky. Elijah will work on GSPN, the sports section for the Centre of Attention, and any other opportunities that are presented to him. Elijah attends Louisville Male High School where he golfs and participates in the SAM club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Honors Society, and peer-tutoring. Elijah enjoys shooting hoops with friends, meeting new people, watching movies (particularly Wall-E and Remember the Titans), and eating snacks like goldfish and peanut butter crackers. Elijah looks forward to the good times and the new faces during his time at GSP. Elijah has already met many of these new faces, some of whom have named him “GSPlayer of the Year'' due to his antics at the lunch table. In the future, Elijah plans to explore the world of engineering at the University of Louisville. by Jack Little

Uchechi Anyanwu, 17, was born on April 28th, 2005. From Richmond, Kentucky, she goes to Madison Central High School; her favorite subject is mathematics, and her favorite food is pasta. At GSP, she is a resident at Yerkes Hall, and she studies the art of deception in her General Studies class Bluejays, Weasels, and Squirrels. She enjoys reading, playing the flute, and baking in her free time. In journalism, she is met having had previous experience through writing in her AP. Language class. Jaelynn King is a 17-year-old journalist from McCreary County who attends McCreary Central High School. She has experience as an interviewer and as a co-editor of the Raider Review. She also is a member of the Raider Crusaders, Poetry Club, BETA, HOSA, and the Math Club. When King is not in school, she enjoys reading, writing, drawing, camping, and fishing. King is also a black belt in kung-fu. She will be working on the GSPerspectives podcast among other projects during her time at GSP. While in attendance, she hopes to broaden her knowledge of journalism and continue to improve as a writer. Beyond GSP, she hopes to travel and study abroad, and graduate college with a degree in English and art.

Jack Little is a member of the Centre of Attention staff with experience in journalism from writing for the Advocate-Messenger newspaper and broadcasting live events (typically sports) for Boyle County High School. Born and raised right here in Danville, Jack enjoys playing soccer and basketball and likes to watch Rocky IV, his favorite movie, in his free time. Additionally, he’s the president of his DECA club and a member of NHS. He looks forward to providing content for the Centre of Attention, especially in the sports section, which he has a special passion for. In the future, Jack hopes to go to college and earn a degree in Journalism so that he can become a professional sports broadcaster. by Liam Ryan

Maddie is a 17-year-old student at Montgomery County High School and she lives in Mount Sterling. Maddie is a member of the mock trial team, choir, and Y-club. She also stars in the MCHS spring musical each year. Outside of school, she enjoys singing with her church’s praise and worship team, being with her friends and family, and reading. Maddie’s favorite book is Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover which is her favorite author. Her experience with journalism includes working for her school’s yearbook and attending the Morehead Writing Camp last summer. Maddie as of now plans to attend the University of Kentucky next fall to study writing and communications, but she has also considered political science. A fun fact about Maddie is that she is a 2022 mock trial national champion. When asked “Why GSP?” She says she wants to find “her people." Maddie says, “Everyone in my hometown has this version of me that they’ve known forever, but here I can be whoever I want to be.” by Bailee Harper

Robert Butler, 17, was born and raised in Florence, Kentucky. He attends Boone County High School where he writes for his school newspaper. In addition to writing for Boone County High School, Robert is a student athlete. He is a part of the Boone County High School baseball team and the National Honors Society. Previously, he played for the Boone County High School basketball team as well. When Robert isn’t in school or on the baseball field he enjoys working out and watching his favorite sports teams, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Kentucky Wildcats. If Robert could choose any meal to have for dinner he would choose spaghetti, he also likes to snack on green apples. Fun fact about Robert is he is a self taught juggler! When Robert finishes high school he wants to graduate college, have a family, and work for ESPN. Robert applied for GSP because he was inspired by his cousin, Eleanor, who previously completed the program and had so much fun. Audrey Reed, a talented member of her school’s swim team, resides in Lexington, Kentucky, and attends Henry Clay High School. Audrey is a 17-year-old scholar who enjoys spending time outdoors and listening to various genres of music. She also loves watching football with family and friends, her favorite team being the Clemson Tigers. Audrey plans to graduate college with a major in Health Science or Biology. Her dream is to travel around the world. She also wants to continue her education at a Physical Therapy or Medical school. Audrey wishes to work as a Pediatric Physical Therapist in the future. In her time attending the Governor’s Scholar Program here at Centre College, Audrey hopes to meet new people who are like-minded and share similar interests with her. She is eager to meet and learn from other scholars from different backgrounds and beliefs. While at GSP, Audrey is looking to grow as a person and strengthen her skills in journalism. Liam Ryan is a 17-year-old writer and journalist from Louisville, Kentucky. He goes to St. Xavier, better known as St. X. He does Mock Trial for his school and is also in the Economics club and Future Problem Solving club. He enjoys reading, playing video games, and watching movies (Return of The Jedi being his favorite). Liam is looking forward to meeting new people and discovering new perspectives while at GSP. He also likes spending his free time playing cards and being with his new friends at GSP. In the future, Liam plans to explore many options for college. Hi! My name is Ryan Tucker and I am 17 years old. I am from Eddyville Kentucky and go to Lyon County High School where I am a cheerleader. I have multiple involvements in my school such as President of FBLA, Student Council, and Vice President of the Pep Club. In my community I waitress at a local barbeque restaurant which is one of my favorite pastimes. I also like to juggle and read books for fun. A fun fact about me is that I live near a lake, Lake Barkley, and spend most of my time on a boat with my friends and family. After high school, I plan to attend college and study law. A message I want to take away from GSP is for my horizons to be broadened as my eyes are open to new experiences, people, and intellectual risks. Hello! My name is Lauren Montgomery, and I am a member of the Journalism and Mass Media Focus Area for Centre GSP ‘22. I am 17 years old. My hometown is Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and I attend Hopkinsville High School. I am involved in various organizations outside of GSP including Student Council, Future Farmers of America, BETA Club, and National Honors Society. As far as sports, I swim and play soccer. In my freetime, I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading books, and working out. My plan after high school is to attend college and pursue a career in real estate. A fun fact about me is that I did gymnastics for eight years! The thing I am most excited for at GSP is to grow my intellectual thinking and to be introduced to new opportunities. by Ryan Tucker

Olivia is an incoming senior at Russell County High School, based in Russell County. She was born on December 1st, 2005. Her pathway is aligned with nursing, specifically pediatrics. Her hobbies and activities include highschool volleyball, Y-Club, FCA, FFA, Pep Club, enjoying time with her friends, and trying new experiences. Her favorite GSP experience so far is meeting all her new friends and making memories with them. Bethany Craycroft is an incoming senior at Meade County High school in Brandenburg, Kentucky. She is involved in many extra curriculars in her town like volleyball, chorus, and HOSA while also holding the senior class president position for the 2022-2023 school year. In her free time, she loves to pick up a good book and spend time with her friends back home. At GSP, when Bethany isn't working on journalism, she is learning "The Concept of Generosity" during her general studies time. Her birthday falls on January 26th, 2005. Mady is an incoming senior at George Rogers Clark High School in Clark County. She is involved in Marching Band, GSA, Green Club, and Pep Club. Mady was born on March 9, 2005 and she is now 17 years old. In her free time she enjoys snacking on Cheez-its and reading outside. She has been on many college tours and is excited about exploring options in the fall with a planned pathway of becoming a pediatrician. So far, her GSP experience has been overwhelming but lots of fun. Her mission for Journalism is to encourage inclusivity across campus and she is most excited about the potential for the Journalism focus area.

Bailee Harper is a 17-year-old student at Breckinridge County High School and lives in Hardinsburg. Bailee is on her cheer team, an officer for HOSA, and KYA 3 Chief of Staff. Outside of school she works as a waitress at her hometown restaurant, Dranes Kurve Inn. Her hobbies and interests include spending time with friends and family, being outside, watching movies, and listening to everything from Taylor Swift to Metallica. A few of the ways Bailee has experience in Journalism are she was a previous student employee at her hometown radio station 104.3 The River, she loves photography, and she enjoys meeting and talking to new people. A fun fact about Bailee is she owns her own business, Wild N’ Wired Jewelry Co. Bailee plans on attending an undecided college and plans to major in pre-med or nursing, she has also considered political science or journalism. Bailee has always been extremely curious and social. When asked why GSP she responded, “I wanted to meet new people, learn new ideas, and explore new areas of life.” Her mission statement is one word and it’s discovery. by Maddie Brother

Hayley Hoffman is a Faculty Lecturer in Instructional Communication & Research at the University of Kentucky. She earned a B.A. in English from Centre College, a M.A. in Communication from UK, and recently finished her Ph.D. in Communication at UK. In her free time, she enjoys taking walks, arranging songs for the piano, playing board games, and trying to read too many books at one time. This is her fourth summer at GSP. by Hayley Hoffman
